Charentais melons are said to be the finest melon in both taste and texture. Because of their small size, they are the perfect “breakfast for two” melon.

These globe shaped fruits have either a smooth or a slightly netted gray-green rind with dark green, slightly furrowed sutures. They have an orange flesh and a luscious, flowery aroma.

Popular in Europe, Charentais’ are especially prized in France for their rich, honeyed finish. Try wrapping slices of Charentais with proscuitto as an appetizer or cut one in half and serve with port wine poured over it for a special dessert.

Melissa’s Charentais Melons are best when ripened at room temperature. After cutting or ripening store in the refrigerator for a few days. Choose melons with a sweet aroma.

Home sweet home is where you want to take Melissa’s California Crab Apples. Firm, well-colored, and very fragrant, Crab Apples are usually not eaten raw because of their sweet and sour flavor and high pectin content. Instead, these small apples are widely used to make outstanding jams and jellies and serve as a delicious accompaniment to pork and poultry. Simply core apples, bake until hot (about 20 minutes) and serve.

Melissa’s Crab Apples should have smooth, firm, unbroken surfaces free of bruises and blemishes. Some apples may have a brownish freckled surface on their skin, usually caused by weather, but their flavor is unaffected. To keep apples crisp, store refrigerated, in a plastic bag (to retain moisture).

This berry has a distinct tart flavor, making for a delicious holiday relish. Cranberries were at one time traditionally served only on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Today, cranberries are available and enjoyed year-round with their peak season in October and November.

Recently, the popularity of the cranberry flavor has grown tremendously. Cranberries can be found in an assortment of prepared food products as well as in any number of recipes. Chefs have found that by adding cranberries to recipes, they can add bold flavor, while adding to the nutritional value of their menu.

Melissa’s Cranberries should be kept at 40-50°F. Best when used within 1 week. Choose cranberries that are deep red, clean and firm.

Crimson Delight Apples

A new variety from Washington being introduced into the marketplace by Washington State University after some 15 years of cross-breeding. The university has been trying to develop an apple with good taste, firm texture and extended storage capabilities; the Crimson Delight is the first release from those efforts.
